“An Evening with Renaissance Philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli“
Free to Attend
Sister Cities and the Morgan Hill Steve Tate Library are pleased to co-host an event about the thought and work of modern political science’s founding father and author of The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli, with Erica Benner, lecturer at the Hertie School for Governance in Berlin. View Erica Benner’s website and info about her latest book, “Adventures in Democracy,” noted as a 2024 “Book to Read” in the Financial Times.
Machiavelli is a Renaissance philosopher from Florence, Italy, a few miles north of San Casciano Val Di Pesa, a Sister City with Morgan Hill. He is best known for his political treatise, The Prince, and has influenced every political philosopher after him.
Erica Benner is a political philosopher and historian of ideas. She taught at Oxford, the LSE, and Yale before moving to Berlin, where she teaches at the Hertie School for Governance. She has published three acclaimed books on Machiavelli including Be Like the Fox (Penguin 2017), shortlisted for the Elizabeth Longford Prize and a BBC Book of the Week, published in Italian as Esser Volpe: Vita di Machiavelli (Bompiani). Her latest book Adventures in Democracy: The Turbulent World of People Power (Penguin 2024) was a Financial Times pick for What to Read in 2024.
The presentation is part of an annual Italian event that alternates locations: the Festival Machiavellerie, as it is known in Italian, is hosted in San Casciano / Florence, and in an alternate year the Festival is hosted in an international city. Sister Cities is proud to bring the presentation to Morgan Hill in honor of Morgan Hill’s 120th anniversary in 2026.
The annual Festival Machiavellerie is a wonderful cultural event celebrating the life, works, and legacy of Niccolò Machiavelli, whose influence on modern political philosophy is enormous.
